COMS Professor Shares Her Climate Change Research at a Prestigious National Conference
A Communication and Media Studies Department professor will present her research on climate change reporting in the South Pacific at a national conference.
Professor Elizabeth Burch’s manuscript, “A Sea Change For Climate Refugees In The South Pacific: How Social Media—Not Journalism—Tells Their Real Story,” was selected to be featured at the annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference in early August. Because of the Covid-19 outbreak, this year’s conference will be held online.
Burch discovered through her research that Pacific Islander journalists and activists in Fiji and Tuvalu have bypassed the major media outlets they believe are not giving proper coverage to climate change impacts in their region. Instead, they’re making their case through social media channels.
