Intern Kevin Cruz Expands His Horizons at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County

by Mariana Bohling

Kevin Cruz’s internship at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County has been a journey of discovery, hands-on learning, and a glimpse into a future he’s excited to embrace.

Cruz, a Communications Major, helps with event management as well as day-to-day organization to ready the museum for young visitors. Additionally, he has enjoyed supervising some hands-on activities with the children. No two days at the museum look the same. Kevin usually clocks in on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the mornings, and each shift brings new challenges and surprises. "Last time, I was helping them make bird boxes for the kids' activities," he recalled. Upon arriving each day, Kevin checks in with his two supervisors, who assign the day’s projects whether that means logistics, event organization, or lending a helping hand wherever needed.

When asked what he would do if given full control over a project targeted towards the youngest visitors, Kevin’s enthusiasm was clear: "I’d probably build another playground or a play structure for the kids." His passion and interest in designing safe, fun spaces for children to explore and learn shines through his every word.

Cruz firmly believes that internships are one of the best ways to prepare for a future career. "You get real experience," he said. Cruz explained that he has learned how to work directly with children as well as how to feel comfortable with public speaking. Additionally, he’s gained knowledge about key tools and techniques needed in museum design and installation. "It's been great!" he enthuses.

Perhaps most importantly, this internship has helped Cruz, who is a senior, shape his career goals. It strengthened his desire to work with children in some capacity. "The museum even offered me a job application for the summer," he said, beaming. "I’m really excited for the opportunity to stay on and keep working with the kids."

Cruz’s experience is a reminder that internships can do more than build a resume, they can ignite a passion, sharpen new skills, and even carve out the first steps of a meaningful career.
