Marc Duran Lands EdSource Media Internship

By Mariana Bohling

Marc Duran starts his days long before most college students have hit the snooze button. By 5 a.m., he’s already clocked in at work. After his shift ends at 1:30 p.m., he's off to class, then meetings for Sonoma State University’s student newspaper, where he serves as second-in-command. And somewhere in between, he’s reporting stories that impact thousands of students across the California State University (CSU) system.

Duran, a senior communications major at Sonoma State, is currently an intern at EdSource, an organization that covers education across California. As part of a team of student journalists from schools like Cal Poly and UCLA, Duran is helping cover a wide range of issues unfolding on CSU campuses.

“We each focus on our own campus and what’s happening there,” he says. Duran has especially been focusing on reporting on the Sonoma State Administration. Duran’s internship is giving him a glimpse of the real-world impact of journalism. Weekly editorial meetings on Thursdays and Fridays mimic the pace of a professional newsroom, where interns pitch stories, share updates, and brainstorm the next big scoop.

The internship hasn’t just built up his reporting skills, it’s also tested his endurance. Balancing early morning shifts, a full course load, and multiple editorial responsibilities hasn’t been easy.

“Honestly, the hardest part is just getting up in the morning,” he admits with a laugh. “Sometimes I’m in meetings and I’m just trying to push through. But I do my best to stay focused and make the most of my time.”

Despite the challenges, Duran remains optimistic and grateful. For him, this internship has been more than a résumé booster; it’s been a proving ground. “You can learn in class, but the experience you get from an internship is something else. It gets you into the industry and shows employers you’re serious.”

Whether it’s in journalism or beyond, he knows this hands-on experience will continue to shape his future.
