Spring 2026 SSU Application Lead California-
Community Engagement Student Fellowship Program (can get internship units)
This is for the CCE student fellowship program). If this program has already been filled, students can also apply to get internship units to become a blogger, writing about nonprofits and community engagement for SSU Community Engagement and receive units.
1. Caroline Bañuelos, Community Partnerships Coordinator, Center for Community Engagement (CCE) Sonoma State University (SSU), 1801 East Cotati Ave. Suite 2050, Rohnert Park, CA 94928, caroline.banuelos@sonoma.edu (707) 664-3493.
2. The SSU Lead CA CE Student Fellow will be a student who has participated in a Service-Learning class. The CESF Student Fellow will actively promote service-learning and experiential learning opportunities by serving as a student ambassador across campus. They will assist with creating marketing materials, managing outreach campaigns, and supporting CCE events that highlight the impact of community-engaged learning at SSU. Working closely with the CCE director and staff, the Fellow will help coordinate programming that connects students with campus partners, faculty, and local community organizations. Through this role, they will develop skills in communication, public speaking, community engagement, and program coordination while contributing to the visibility and value of service-learning within the SSU community.
3. The SSU CCE’s Service-Learning Ambassador will support marketing, communications, and student engagement efforts that promote service-learning at SSU. Their primary responsibilities include creating digital content, marketing materials, and web updates that highlight CCE programs and community engagement opportunities. Using tools like Canva Pro, the intern will develop website materials, social media posts, infographics, and educational materials—including guides that explain service-learning and its connection to NACE Career Competencies. They will also prepare classroom-ready information sheets for faculty.
The intern will engage directly with students by giving short presentations to classes, student clubs, and campus programs, as well as representing the CCE at events such as Seawolf Days, tabling sessions, and community engagement showcases. Through these activities, the intern will strengthen CCE outreach while gaining practical experience in communication, event support, and community engagement.
a. The Service-Learning Ambassador role is essential to expanding student awareness and participation in community-engaged learning at SSU. As service-learning continues to demonstrate significant benefits—enhancing résumés, building career competencies, and deepening students’ understanding of community needs, there is an increased demand for clear, accessible guidance on how to get involved. This ambassador will play a critical role in bridging that gap by actively educating students about service-learning opportunities, highlighting the real-world impact of their involvement, and encouraging them to engage as informed, responsible community members. With dedicated outreach and peer-to-peer engagement, the ambassador will help prepare students for meaningful civic participation both during and beyond their time at SSU.
b. The Service-Learning Ambassador will be identified through collaboration with the Director of the CCE Faculty Fellows and the Faculty Fellows team, who will help recommend a highly qualified student for this role. The internship will follow the standard structure of 45 hours per unit, with a preference for students completing 3 units to ensure adequate engagement. 35 to 50 hours should, therefore, not be a problem for the Student Fellow to achieve. The selected ambassador will have access to workspace in the CCE office and will participate in both on-campus and off-campus community activities.
As part of their experience, the Service-Learning Ambassador will document their service-learning journey through a video reflection. They will also write a letter to the President of SSU highlighting their accomplishments through the CESF opportunity, as well as a thank-you letter to the Lead California–CESF donors whose support makes this program possible.
c. I will support the Student Fellow through regular weekly meetings dedicated to planning, guidance, and progress check-ins to ensure the successful completion of all project goals. Mentorship will focus on helping the student develop strong decision-making and time-management skills as they balance academic responsibilities with the needs of the CCE. I will also provide ongoing feedback on written materials, presentations, and digital content, offering assistance whenever questions or challenges arise. This structured support will help the student grow professionally while ensuring they feel confident and well-equipped throughout their fellowship experience.
