Paid summer internships: Bay Area Journalism

Type of Opportunity: Internship
Date Posted: February 25, 2026
Deadline: Open until filled
Current Opportunity: Yes

My name is Nico Savidge, I'm a Bay Area journalist and the director of the Pacific Media Workers Guild's Bay News Rising summer internship program.

We are excited to bring Bay News Rising back in the summer of 2026. If you're not familiar, Bay News Rising provides local student journalists with a paid, part-time summer internship that helps build their reporting skills and prepares them for a career in media.

Candidates apply by pitching us a story idea, which they'll report, write and edit over six weeks, while matched with a professional journalist who will help guide their process. Meanwhile, they'll get valuable skills and professional guidance from journalists at a series of seminars on topics like navigating early journalism careers and freelancing. At the end of the program, students will have a great clip for their portfolio — we'll publish their story on the Bay News Rising website, and pitch it to other local media outlets — and be paid a $1,000 stipend.

We're recruiting for this year's class of Bay News Rising interns. We're particularly looking for those who have some reporting experience (i.e. they've published solid stories with a student newspaper or other outlet, or have shown strong writing skills in class assignments).

Please fill out the application form here. Any questions please reach out to Nico Savidge at: [email protected]
