Bay Area News Group($17.95 per hour) Internship

If you're a dedicated college journalist eager to tell readers about what’s happening in the communities around them, consider applying to be a summer reporting intern at the Bay Area News Group, the newsroom of The Mercury News and East Bay Times.

We’re the Bay Area’s premier news organization, and we’re seeking two reporting interns to tap into the successes and challenges of local government, from town councils to school boards, and keep a thumb on the pulse of engaged communities. Expect to be in your communities or in the Bay Area News Group’s San Jose office on weekdays, and write regularly, with a sense of place, to meet the demands of this audience.

You will handle breaking news in the birthplace of Silicon Valley – from crime and housing to politics and development. The ideal reporter has the energy to jump from one hot story to the next in a competitive news environment and the initiative and time-management skills to dig deep when impactful enterprise opportunities emerge. You should be able to work both alone and collaboratively with a rotating cast of reporters and editors.

You will work in real-time, publishing stories in collaboration with photographers, graphic and data journalists, and editors. We serve a savvy, sophisticated audience that includes millions of online readers and hundreds of thousands of people who read our printed newspapers.

An ideal candidate will have these qualities:

  • Excellent news judgment and a drive to compete

  • Demonstrated ability to write sharp, clean copy that draws readers in, including nut graphs and SEO headlines

  • The ability to find and pitch multiple story ideas to an editor.

  • Proficiency in using the web and social media to report and share stories

In our diverse region, additional language skills are a plus.

This is an 8-week paid internship beginning in July 2025 with an hourly wage of $17.95. The internship requires a valid driver's license, and reliable transportation and is eligible for mileage reimbursement.

To apply email your resume, 3-5 clips, and a cover letter highlighting your vision for the job to interns@bayareanewsgroup.com to convince us that you're the right person to join our local news team.  Please put the words "News Internship" in the subject line of your email.
