The San Francisco Standard is seeking an enthusiastic and versatile photojournalist for its Summer 2026 internship program. This is a hands-on, in-person opportunity to work across daily news, sports, culture, food, and tech coverage in one of the country’s most dynamic cities.
The photo intern will support visual coverage across the newsroom, collaborating closely with editors and reporters to elevate storytelling across platforms. They will shoot assignments in the field, assist with photo editing, and have opportunities to shadow team members to learn narrative photo editing, visual storytelling, and multimedia production. Additionally, the photo intern will receive hands-on mentorship and learning opportunities from staff photographers and editors.
This internship is based in San Francisco and requires on-site or in-field presence 3-5 days per week. Interns must have reliable transportation to cover assignments in the city and the greater Bay Area. Company photography, lighting, and computer equipment will be provided.
Requirements
- Strong photojournalism skills and a broad portfolio; drone certification is a plus
- Experience with tight deadlines and, ideally, long-form visual storytelling
- Previous experience in a newsroom, as a freelancer, or currently in a journalism or similar programs.
- Familiarity with PhotoMechanic and Photoshop or similar editing and captioning software
- Experience creating content for platforms like Instagram or TikTok is a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Spanish- and Chinese-language skills are a plus.
This is an in-office and in-field position around our San Francisco office. Start date is flexible, May-June, 2026.
This internship pays $25 per hour, and may be part-time or full-time.
