Summary:

The Communications Internship position(s) at SMGR will provide students enrolled in the Communication and Media Studies program at Sonoma State University with the opportunity to gain hands-on, practical work experience in the disciplines of internal and external communications. 

Interns will work directly with SMGR Communications Lead, Rob Lopez, who is a former newspaper reporter and expert in public, community and media relations, as well as employee and executive communications. Under his direction, interns will have the opportunity to create healthcare related stories for internal and external-facing communication channels and publications. They will gain skills in interviewing techniques, audio and video storytelling, editing, production, photography, copy writing and social media production. 

Job Description:

This internship role will require a minimum of 10 hours per week to a maximum of 20 hours per week of onsite work at the SMGR administrative office, 451 Aviation Boulevard, Santa Rosa. Interns will also have the chance to perform work at Sutter medical sites in Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Healdsburg and Santa Rosa. Interns will interact with SMGR physicians and Advanced Practice Clinicians such as nurses and other medical specialists. The internship can span one or more semesters. 

Below are some specific projects interns will work on to gain valuable communications experience:

  • Launch new “Road Rounds” audio story series. Interns will have the opportunity to interview physicians and APCs about important healthcare topics. They will produce audio and video stories for distribution throughout SMGR, and the entire Sutter network of employees.

  • Audio and video story editing. Use of creative editing techniques to package a variety of new content in interesting and compelling ways

  • Write stories on healthcare topics for SMGR and Sutter-wide intranet webpages and newsletters

  • Develop long-form audio or video stories such as “day-in-the-life” features about physicians and patients involving important healthcare topics

  • Create media pitches to earn media coverage for SMGR

  • Help manage content for SMGR’s digital signage network with messages and images of interest to the organization

  • Create social media content posts including Reels and TikTok videos on topics such as common health myths; how to read medication labels; and the importance of preventative care. Feature discussions with clinicians, dietitians, and mental health professionals

  • Update clinician rosters and biographies  

Timing:

SMGR would like to open the first communications internship opportunity in the August/September time frame.
