While we’re all looking forward to having students back on campus in the fall, instructors have worked hard to adapt to the current online format, even using it bring some “star power” into the virtual classroom.

Hi! My name is Kylie Rose Lawrence. I am a California native but spent much of my childhood in the Pacific Northwest, specifically Washington state. There, I grew up on a small island with a farm and garden that influenced my strong love for animals and appreciation for nature.

Associate Professor Emily Acosta Lewis and Assistant Professor Talena Sanders were awarded $8,000 each for two separate proposals. Acosta Lewis was selected for her proposal, "Diversity of Portrayals in Holiday Movies: Racial Stereotypes and Underrepresented Groups".

Coms student and baseball player Desmond Gates was a recent focus of a story by Press Democrat Sports columnist Bob Padecky.

Many students may not know it yet, but the Communication and Media Studies Department has taken an important step into its future.

Professor Elizabeth Burch’s manuscript, “A Sea Change For Climate Refugees In The South Pacific: How Social Media—Not Journalism—Tells Their Real Story,” was selected to be featured at the annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference in early August.

Ryan Harvey, a 2020 graduate of Communication and Media Studies, has won national recognition for the Campus Movie Fest film he wrote and directed during his final year at SSU.

If Aubrie Tolliver could describe her career in one word, it would probably be “storyteller.”

Tolliver is a multi-media journalist (MMJ) and anchor for 49ers Cal-Hi Sports Report, a program affiliated with the San Francisco 49ers that covers high school athletics in the Bay Area.

Amy Gutierrez is no stranger to taking on new challenges. 

The Communication and Media Studies Department’s newest permanent faculty member didn’t start out with an eye toward a career in higher education, but her media background and passion for what she does makes her a great addition to the team.
